Aronia & Ginger

Aronia and ginger reach you through two different doors, and neither of them is the tongue's sense of taste. Aronia's proanthocyanidins bind the proteins in saliva and strip away its lubricating film, which is why the berry dries the mouth and why it carries more anthocyanins than any other food measured in the USDA survey — 1480 mg per 100 g. Ginger works on the nerves instead: its gingerols activate TRPV1, the same heat-sensing receptor that capsaicin from chilli targets, which is why a fresh-pressed root feels hot rather than tastes hot. Ginger also holds something rare among food plants: well-established use status from the European Medicines Agency, the category that requires recognised evidence of efficacy, for preventing the nausea of motion sickness.

Scientifically Supported Health Benefits of Aronia and Ginger

1. Arterial stiffness

In a 12-week randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 102 middle-aged men and women, aronia (poly)phenol supplementation significantly improved measures of arterial stiffness: pulse wave velocity fell by 0.24 m/s and 24-hour peripheral augmentation index by 6.8%. [1]

2. Endothelial function

A 12-week randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 66 healthy men measured flow-mediated dilation, an ultrasound measure of how well an artery widens as blood flow increases. Both aronia extract and whole fruit powder outperformed placebo — by 1.2 and 0.9 percentage points respectively. [2]

3. Inflammation markers — two plants, one direction

A 2025 systematic review of 18 human studies on aronia reported reductions in C-reactive protein, TNF-α and IL-6, and raised activity of the body's own antioxidant enzymes. [3] A dose-response meta-analysis of 29 randomised controlled trials of ginger found the same three markers reduced, and total antioxidant capacity raised. [4] The two plants reach this through unrelated chemistry — polyphenols in aronia, gingerols in ginger.

4. Gut microbiota

Both of the aronia vascular trials above tracked the gut microbiome, and both found it shifted. The larger reported increased microbial gene richness and increases in the butyrate-producing species Lawsonibacter asaccharolyticus and Intestinimonas butyriciproducens. [1] [2]

5. Nausea

The European Medicines Agency granted ginger rhizome well-established use status in May 2025 for the prevention of nausea and vomiting in motion sickness, at 1–2 g taken one hour before travel. [5] In pregnancy, a meta-analysis of 12 randomised trials in 1,278 women found nausea symptoms significantly improved compared with placebo. [6]

6. Gastric emptying

In a randomised, double-blind crossover trial, ginger accelerated gastric emptying — the stomach's half-emptying time fell from 16.1 to 12.3 minutes. [7] The European Medicines Agency lists mild spasmodic gastrointestinal complaints, including bloating and flatulence, under traditional use. [5]

7. Exercise and recovery

Eleven consecutive days of 2 g of ginger daily reduced delayed-onset muscle soreness from eccentric exercise by 23–25% compared with placebo; a single dose had no effect. [8] A 2023 systematic review of ten human trials in trained and recreational sportspeople concluded that aronia (poly)phenols may improve redox balance, while evidence for performance itself remained inconclusive. [9]

8. Blood lipids

A 2025 GRADE-assessed meta-analysis of seven randomised controlled trials of aronia found LDL cholesterol fell by 4.77 mg/dL. That was the only lipid outcome to reach significance. [10]

Why aronia and ginger together

No trial has yet tested this pairing as such. What the evidence shows is two plants that cover different ground — aronia's on blood vessels and the gut microbiome, ginger's on the stomach — and meet on inflammation markers from opposite chemical directions. Most of the trials above used standardised extracts, powders or larger servings than a single shot.
